The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) was created as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) bill from 2009. It's purpose is to push for the adoption and use of electronic health records (EHR) technology with purose by the healthcare providers in the USA.

The HITECH Act established the means to apply stronger requirements from the Privacy and Security Rules of HIPAA by requiring security audits be done of all healthcare providers. The audits are partly leveraged within investigations that figure out if the healthcare providers meet certain standards and in compliance with HIPAA.
